Dr. Larry Lai Weng Hong is an Upper Gastrointestinal and Minimally Invasive Surgeon based at Penang General Hospital, Malaysia. He holds a medical degree (MB BCh BAO) from University College Dublin – Penang Medical College and a Master of Surgery (MSurg) from the University of Malaya, with subspecialty training in Upper GI Surgery. He completed his fellowship at Showa University, Tokyo — a recognised esophageal cancer centre — where he gained experience in minimally invasive laparoscopic and robotic surgery, as well as advanced endoscopy for esophageal and gastric conditions. He subsequently completed a fellowship in bariatric and metabolic surgery at China Medical University Hospital, Taichung, Taiwan, with a focus on laparoscopic and robotic-assisted bariatric procedures. He has a particular interest in perioperative nutrition and its role in optimising outcomes in minimally invasive surgery, having pursued dedicated training in this area and previously serving as part of a multidisciplinary nutrition support team in his earlier postings.
