Dr. Thanesh Kumar completed his medical education at Universiti Sains Malaysia (MD) and
earned his Masters in General Surgery (MS) from Universiti Malaya in 2015. He obtained his
Fellowship from Edinburgh (FRCS) in 2017 and from the American College of Surgeons (FACS) in
2022. In 2021, he completed subspecialty training in Hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) surgery from
the Ministry of Health Malaysia.
Since 2015, Dr. Thanesh has served as a General Surgeon at Hospital Queen Elizabeth. He
pursued HPB Surgery training and worked in HPB units at Hospital Umum Sarawak, Hospital
Selayang, and Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah, Alor Setar. He is currently a HPB consultant as well as
the Head of the Department of Surgery, QEH.
Dr. Thanesh is a member of MMA, MPOM, MyHPBS, APHPBA, IHPBA, and the Academy of
Medicine Malaysia. He has been a Committee and Editorial Board Member of MyHPBS since
2022 and is the current President of MyHPBS. He is an invited lecturer at University Malaysia
Sabah, a trainer for General Surgery Masters candidates, HPB Subspecialty Fellowship, and an
examiner for the Royal College of Ireland for the MRCS examination.
